When you read with a child….Everybody Wins!
I have had the joy and pleasure of reading to a child in Cambridge since 2006 in the Power Lunch program. Would you like to make a difference in the life of a child? Here is a simple volunteer opportunity with a high impact, helping children become more enthusiastic about reading and more receptive to learning.
Power Lunch is a reading and mentoring program which pairs elementary school children with volunteers from nearby businesses and community organizations. Once a week, reading partners meet together at the school, and the adult reads a book aloud. The Power Lunch program aims to increase children’s prospects for success in school and in life through these one-to-one reading experiences with caring adults. Reading aloud to children has been shown to be the single most important activity for creating successful readers.
Power Lunch is run locally by Everybody Wins! Metro Boston (EWMB), an affiliate of the national literacy organization Everybody Wins! USA, which was founded in 1991 by New York business executive Arthur Tannenbaum. There are now over 7,000 Power Lunch mentors in cities around the U.S. EWMB was established in 2002 to bring Power Lunch to children in the communities of greater Boston.
Through the Power Lunch program, Everybody Wins! can reach children while they are young, stimulate their interest in reading and learning, and encourage them to believe that they, too, can be successful.
